Comrade Jovanka

"Comrade Jovanka" is the first documentary film to be made about the First Lady of communism in Yugoslavia. For more than 40 years, Jovanka was living in retirement, out of the public eye, closed off in her world and without any desire to share her story with the people.

That is why it is still hard, even today, to get in touch with people and get hold of materials that describe Mrs. Broz. Many do not want to talk because they believe that the picture of her is so bad that it would defile their loving image of Tito. Others refuse to talk, because they will not appear in public without her consent. The film "Comrade Jovanka" proved that a biographical story can be made even without the main actors (Jovanka Broz) in it.

The film is based on accounts of people who were contemporaries and participants of events that took place in No 15 Uzicka Street, where Jovanka Broz spent 35 years living together with Tito. "Comrade Jovanka" is trying to answer many questions and dilemmas that accompany Jovanka Broz: Was she more than just a president's wife? How much did she know and how far did her influence stretch? Was she a victim or a culprit? Referring to passages from various books, various confessions, as well as certain documents, the film is an attempt to elucidate the relationships at the very top of the former system, which are unclear even to people who were part of that system. On the other hand, it is a perspective of a country and time which the younger generations know very little of.
